Help for Hardest Hit HomeownersThe Hardest Hit Fund helps Indiana homeowners who are struggling to make their mortgage payments due to job loss or temporary financial hardship. Qualified homeowners may receive mortgage payment assistance while they search or retrain for new employment. The maximum amount of assistance is either $12,000 or $18,000, depending on the county of residence. All assistance under this program is considered a loan. The loan will only have to be repaid if the homeowner sells the property before the forgiveness period expires (10 years) and there is sufficient equity to pay the loan. In August 2010, the U.S. Department of Treasury announced an expansion of the Hardest Hit Fund to provide additional assistance targeted at unemployed borrowers in states hardest hit by the national foreclosure crisis- Indiana is one of those states.
